Description
Inflammation of the tonsils (usually refers to two small almond-shaped lumps of lymphoid tissues situated in either side at the back of the mouth) caused by bacterial or viral infection.
Persons most commonly affected: Children of both sexes after infancy and before puberty (usually from 5 to 15 years), but can affect other age groups.
Organ or part of body involved: Tonsils, pharynx (throat).
Symptoms and indications: A severe sore throat that makes swallowing very painful, accompanied by fever (up to about 102
Causes and risk factors: Usually caused by Streptococcus bacteririum, although it can be viral in origin.
Prevention: Avoid people with known tonsillitis or bacterial sore throats, if susceptible to tonsillitis. Proper hand washing is still the best way to prevent all kinds of infections, including tonsillitis. That's why it's important to wash your own hands regularly and to show your children how to wash their hands properly. In addition, teach them to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. And if your child has tnsillitis, make sure that no one else uses his or her drinking glasses and eating utensils. Wash those items carefully in hot, soapy water or in a dish washer.
